Star Wars and The Hero's Journey

In 1977, George Lucas released Star Wars and changed storytelling forever. But without inspiration from Joseph Campbell — author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces — Star Wars may have never been. Ο Joseph John Campbell (26 Μαρτίου 1904 – 30 Οκτωβρίου 1987) ήταν Αμερικανός συγγραφέας και καθηγητής λογοτεχνίας στο Sarah Lawrence College. Εργάστηκε στη συγκριτική μυθολογία και στη συγκριτική θρησκεία1. Το έργο του καλύπτει πολλές πτυχές της ανθρώπινης εμπειρίας. Το πιο γνωστό έργο του Κάμπελ είναι το βιβλίο του «The Hero with a Thousand Faces» (1949), στο οποίο συζητά τη θεωρία του για το ταξίδι του αρχετυπικού ήρωα που μοιράζονται οι παγκόσμιες μυθολογίες, που ονομάζεται μονομύθος1. Από τη δημοσίευση του «Ο Ήρωας με τα Χίλια Πρόσωπα», οι θεωρίες του Κάμπελ έχουν εφαρμοστεί από μια μεγάλη ποικιλία σύγχρονων συγγραφέων και καλλιτεχνών. Αποτελείται από τρία μέρη: Ο Χωρισμός (ο ήρωας ξεκινά ένα ταξίδι αναζητώντας περιπέτεια), Η Μύηση (ο ήρωας φτάνει και αντιμετωπίζει μια κρίση) και Η Επιστροφή (ο ήρωας επιστρέφει, μεταμορφώνεται)³.

Ακολουθούν μερικά παραδείγματα ταινιών που ακολουθούν το Ταξίδι του Ηρώου, γνωστό και ως Μονόμυθος: 

 Star Wars1234: Ο Τζορτζ Λούκας, ο δημιουργός του Star Wars, δήλωσε ανοιχτά ότι ο μονόμυθος του Κάμπελ ήταν η έμπνευση για την πρωτοποριακή του σειρά1. 

 Το Matrix The Matrix1234: Αυτή η ταινία ακολουθεί το ταξίδι του Neo, ενός ανθρώπου που ανακαλύπτει ότι ο κόσμος που γνωρίζει είναι μια περίτεχνη εξαπάτηση2.

Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth theory, also known as the Hero’s Journey, is significant in understanding storytelling for several reasons:

1. Universal Narrative Archetype: The Monomyth theory posits that all stories might stem from one source, serving the same general purpose¹. It is considered the ultimate narrative archetype, a singular story upon which all narratives are based¹.

2. Structure to Storytelling: The Monomyth provides a framework that explains narrative conventions and lends structure to the world of storytelling¹. It is designed to explain narrative itself¹.

3. Influence on Modern Fiction: The Monomyth has left an indelible stamp on narrative fiction¹. Many modern writers and artists, including George Lucas, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, J.D. Salinger, and Stephen King, have used the narrative framework provided by the Monomyth in their stories¹.

4. Understanding Human Cognition: Some researchers suggest that Campbell’s Monomyth could be vital to understanding the deep structure of human cognition and the methodology by which sense data is transformed into conscious experience².

5. Role in Leadership and Business: The Monomyth plays an essential role in leadership and business, as it is believed that a large subset of great leaders, influencers, and change-makers throughout human history shared a singular, highly learnable skill: the ability to tell powerful stories³.

6. Core of Western Storytelling: The Monomyth breaks down common story elements that last, forming the core of western storytelling⁴. It consists of three parts: The Separation (the hero sets out a journey, seeking adventure), The Initiation (the hero arrives and faces a crisis), and The Return (the hero comes back, transformed)⁴.

It mirrors the process all human beings go through in order to grow from adolescents into adults1
